A circuit for all the family, with only a small amount of climbing, which tours the countryside and forests around Vielsalm.
We leave the tourist office heading in the direction of Salmchâteau to reach the Fosse Roulette pass, one of the region’s most remarkable sights. This spectacular defile owes its name to the old quarries (fosses d’extraction) in the hillside where slate was mined.
In this corner of the Ardennes, quarries extracted a high-quality sharpening stone called coticule, a schist related to slate. It was, and is, considered the best sort of stone for sharpening old fashioned straight razors.
We continue to climb through countryside and forest to reach Grand Sart, which in winter and in snow looks as though it might be somewhere in the foothills of the Alps… A descent now brings us back to Vielsalm. The last part of the route looks down onto the Lac de Doyards at Vielsalm, a popular spot for boating and fishing and holidays.
Good to know!
