A deeply moving tour of a region profoundly affected by the First World War.
At the end of October 1914, the opposing armies became locked onto a front line that stretched for 750 km between the North Sea and the Swiss border.
The municipality of Comines-Warneton found itself at the heart of this confrontation and has carefully preserved its exceptional wartime heritage. This journey takes us to this history’s most important sites: the area’s main museums, cemeteries and commemorative monuments punctuate the trip. The landscape is surprisingly serene and bucolic.
On the small road leading to Ploegsteert (“Plugstreet” to the British troops), we pass the spot where the so-called “Christmas Truce” took place, when German and British troops came out of their trenches to play football on Christmas Eve 1914. The site is marked with a recently erected monument and footballs left in remembrance.
Further on, the Ploegsteert Memorial to the Missing comes into view, a temple-like circular structure overlooking cemeteries fi lled with British and Commonwealth graves. On its walls are inscribed the names of 11,447 British and South African soldiers who have no known grave. This is a tour that will leave no one unmoved.
