You don't need to go abroad for great bike itineraries. The East Cantons offer some magnificent cycling routes, like this one, between lakes and open horizons.
Right from the start we head into open country, and can enjoy clear views over a vast landscape. We are riding on a RAVeL along the shores of the beautiful Lac de Bütgenbach, an artificial lake whose waters suggest a swim after this expedition. Further on, the greenway provides us with glimpses of wild nature; a little after Honsfeld we find the River Warche in its infancy, flowing in a damp and muddy area.
At Büllingen we start heading towards the Vennbahn across the loveliest of landscapes, where villages exude the impression of peaceful rural life. Shortly after Schoppen, we come to Ondenval, where we pick up the Vennbahn, a former strategic railway of the German armies which now has become one of Europe’s finest greenways.
We head along it, passing a kaleidoscope of the region’s varied countryside. At Waimes we take the fork that leads to Weywertz and from there we head back to Bütgenbach and its lake.
Good to know!
Discover another kind of biking: on rails, with a four-person railbike (draisine). Fun for all the family!

From the church of Bütgenbach, follow the Velotour signs in the direction of point-noeud 94, where the RAVeL route begins.
At Honsfeld, at the second disused level crossing, leave the RAVeL, taking the direction of points-noeuds 97, 111, 119, 120, 121, 128. Follow the Vennbahn to Weywertz. After the Vennbahn information panel at the Servais garage, leave the Vennbahn and turn hard right in the direction of points-noeuds 90, 95 and 94.
