Relive the memory of the Belgian poet, Emile Verhaeren with a visit to the setting of his most beautiful inspirations at the Espace Emile Verhaeren in Roisin (Honnelles).

Espace Emile Verhaeren in a few words

The Espace Emile Verhaeren presents a series of duplicates of 25 historical documents and 13 canvases, illustrating the privileged contacts that the poet maintained with the most honourable members of the art and literature avant-gardists of the time, such as Seurat, Verlaine and Van Rysselberghe.

Accompanied by numerous extracts of poetry works and bilingual informative texts, the Espace Emile Verhaeren is an invitation to discover or rediscover one of the greatest artistic poets and writers from the end of the 19th century to the beginning of 20th century.

Some information on the poet himself

Emile Verhaeren was born in Saint-Amand (in the Anvers province) on 21 May 1855 into a Bourgeois family. He studied law at the University of Louvain, but only acted in a few cases.

Just before the 20th century, the poet was renowned all over the world. He travelled across Europe holding conferences and King Albert I declared him a national poet. In 1911, he narrowly missed the Nobel Prize for Literature.

In 1914 when the First World War began, Verhaeren, a militant pacifist, was distraught. He condemned the lunacy of the war in inflamed and poignant verses and he increased his conferences. At the age of 61, he died after he falling under a train when trying to board it.
