Discover this pioneer of organic design and an emblematic figure of Scandinavian architecture and design. In Hornu (Bossu), from 09/02 to 04/05/14.

Natural light is precious in the Scandinavian countries with artificial light often needed to supplement it. In fact, artificial light plays an essential role both on a purely functional front, but also on a psychological and social front.

Alvar Aalto understood this. He remains today, an endless source of inspiration for new generations and was a pioneer in the search for solutions that would sublimate light inside buildings.

7 projects have been chosen to illustrate Aalto's most iconic lightings.

You will discover a collection of over 100 pieces, provided by a private collection of several owners. Taking into account a period that spanned from the 1930s to the end of the 1950s, the exhibition is split into two major parts:

    • The first is an installation, a walk on a pontoon overlooking water, in which Aalto's suspensions are reflected.
    • In the second section you discover, thanks to archive documents, photos and drawings, the beginnings of Aalto's lightings, their mechanics and their intrinsic link with architecture.

The collection shows to what extend each lighting participates in a contextual and spacial experience, even when they are taken out of their architectural context and are made to function as a single piece.

More than an architect-designer, it's a life's work that awaits you at Grand Hornu Images!
