Bread hall, ducal courts, administrative building then museum: the building reflects the changing lives of the citizens. In Brussels until 20/04/14.

Visit this exhibition and discover eight centuries of history!

At the start of the 16th century, the young Charles V ordered a prestigious building to be built in the Grand-Place on the site of the former bread hall. This building is still known as the "Maison du Roi" (the King's house).

During the 19th century, at the instigation of Charles Buls, then the mayor of the city, its façade was completely restored and a tower, which was on the original plan, was added.

This renovation is a reflection of the urbanisation policy in Brussels at the time.

Today, the building houses the City Museum.

This exhibition recounts the history of this exceptional place:

  • Architectural features,
  • Engravings and drawings,
  • Paintings and plans,
  • Sculptures and photographs,
  • Digital reconstructions!
