Read in your local community: World Book Day

Read in your local community: World Book Day
© Wallonie, Fédé Wallonie-Bruxelles et Région Bruxelles Capitale.

An original way to incite people to create projects around books and reading. In Wallonia, from 23/04 to 04/05/14.

Associations, citizens, institutions and teachers have all been called to take part in organising activities in their local communities to encourage people to read more.

The project is promoted by mayors and local councils, who will be handing out €10 book vouchers to anyone taking part in the activities. The event has support from the Walloon region, the Wallonia-Brussels Federation and the Brussels Capital Region.

Why 23 April? On 23 April 1616 Cervantes, Shakespeare and Garcilaso de la Vega, known as the Inca, all passed away. This same day, writers such as Druon, K. Laxness, Nabokov, Pla and Mejía Vallejo were born. This is why this date is a symbolic one for universal literature, and has been chosen by UNESCO to pay homage around the world to books and their authors and to encourage each and every one of us, especially the younger generations, to discover the pleasure of reading and to respect the contribution of writers to social and cultural progress. Literary activities have also been organised on this occasion in libraries, schools and several venues in Brussels and Wallonia.

This event is also taking place in Brussels!
