Day of the Tree in Wallonia

Festive day of entertainment, distribution of seedlings, an exchange, information stands and tastings of regional produce! In Wallonia, on 23/11/13.

The Day of the Tree in Wallonia takes place as a part of the Week of the Tree and in 2013, the Willow tree is the star of the show

Willow bark has been used in traditional medicine for over 2500 years. The Mesopotamians used it as a pain killer.

The young branches of long-leaved species are very supple and can be easily worked. They are used in a variety of basket-making techniques, from the more delicate (table and flower baskets...) to the more commun (clothes baskets, animal baskets, wicker luggage trunks, fishing baskets...).

But that's not all!

As there is another image as commun as the wicker made by basket makers and that is that of the sapling willows that line fields. They marked out land boundaries and guarded the cattle in the fields.

Given the importance of willow, we hope that this year's edition of The Day of the Tree showcases all its facets and uses.

Therefore, municipalities are being called upon, especially if they have been selected for the distribution of trees, to raise awareness of this subject in the general public.

In several towns of Wallonia.
You can find the list of the selected towns on the site below.
