An eponymous comic book is the main part of this exhibition. They complement each other and discuss different themes. In Stavelot from 21/03 to 16/11/14!

You will discover the letters, drawings, newspapers, documents, weapons, day to day items and even clothes, drawn in original comic strips.

The exhibition, therefore, enriches the comic with an added third dimensional aspect.

"Il était une fois 1914" (Once upon a time 1914) is a collective and never-before-seen work, put together and edited by Stavelot Abbey and exhibited by the IPW (Walloon Heritage Institute).

A dozen or so Walloon illustrators and scriptwriters have taken part in this ambitious project and contributed an illustrated story:

  • Venanzi, Barthelemy and Hamo,
  • Jarbinet, Jamar, Carin and Chardez,
  • Courtois, Dugomier and Pierret,
  • Marc-Renier et Van Linthout.

Each story pertains to a region of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation, from Stavelot to Mons, via Brussels and Liège.

The stories chronologically retrace the German army's invasion of Belgium... but not only that.

In fact, Stavelot Abbey has chosen to adopt a unique and original viewpoint of the Great War: this comic aimed at children, parents and grandparents alike, tells the smaller story hidden inside the larger story and deals with difficult, yet crucial themes such as:

  • The massacre of civilians
  • The help of the French army in Wallonia
  • The legend of the Angels of Mons
  • The Red Cross and the resistance
  • and even the organisation of daily life.

The album finishes with a graphical and educational booklet which gives the reader additional information on the different themes and which integrates life stories, whether real or fictitious.

The exhibition is being held for the centenary of the start of the First World War.
