Discover this expo in which the themes test the limits between naturalism, symbolism and expressionism. In Mons from 22/08 to 23/11/14.

The aim is to bring the artistic signatures of an era in crisis to the fore. The works exposed range from paintings, sculptures to graphic or photographic works by, among others:

    • Constantin Meunier, Georges Minne or Léon Frédéric,
    • Léon Spillaert, Fernand Khnopff, Félicien Rops or Max Klinger,
    • Alfred Kubin, Käthe Kollwitz or even Ludwig Meidner.

With the benefit of the hindsight of history, the exhibition studies - from a new angle - the avant-garde expressions with the aim of revealing works that tell the stories of dark days.

In this way, whether it is in Belgium or Germany (country of origin of most of the works), the representatives of symbolism and expressionism conceive works that move between idyllic and menacing visions.

Visions of fear, violence and apocalypse meet projects showing utopian worlds.

The exhibition attempts to characterise, above the boundaries of countries and styles, how modern European culture is born from a general sentiment of doubt and uncertainty.

    Good to know!

The Bam will be offering two other distinctive exhibitions: one from a historical viewpoint, and this one, which looks at art.

Both are united by the chronology of the facts and are a part of the First World War commemorations.
