The MIMA in  Brussels decided to focus on 5 internationally renowned American artists during its exhibition "City Lights", from 24/03 to 31/12/16.

City Lights, the first exhibition at the MIMA is an opportunity to highlight this new cosmopolitan spirit claimed by the institution.

The title of the exhibition 'City Lights' is a visual translation of this cosmopolitan thinking, and is inspired by the Chaplin film that evokes the consumerist charms of a seductive and merciless city, which subjugates the rich and the poor to loneliness. Except The Tramp, the celestial wanderer who frees the heart of the blind humble flower girl (solitude personified), by playing the clown. In the end we are left to wonder whether the title ‘city lights’ refers to the reallife characters that inspired the famous tramp?

Here, City Lights is a metaphor for the 5 artists who have learned to communicate an empathic, instant and playful pleasure through their creations in museums and at the heart of cities. They have gained popularity in the course of urban projects that people have discovered by accident as they come around a street corner or on social networks.

Swoon, Maya hayuk, MoMo and the artistic duo FAILE are authentic representatives of a 2.0 culture. Therefore, and because they know each other but have never had the opportunity to work together before, they joined forces for City Lights and the inauguration of the MIMA's collective adventure.
