Various emotional commemorations will be organised at the historic Loncin Fort. In Ans on 15/08/14.

Every year, commemorations take place at Loncin Fort on 15/08 to pay homage to the soldiers who valiantly defended their country against the advance and invasion of German troops.

A symbolic cannon shot is fired every year at 5:20pm, time at which the fort finally exploded under heavy enemy shellfire, after 11 days of resistance.

A 42cm shell weighing 800 was fired from the infamous Big Bertha and destroyed the fort, killing 350 young Belgians, most of which are buried in the depths of the fort to this day.

This year, for the 100th anniversary, the traditional homage ceremonies will be more emotional than ever. Here is the afternoon schedule:

    • Homage ceremony at the fort's monument with national authorities and figures.
    • Cortège with military brass bands.
    • Relighting of the Remembrance Flame and firing of the cannon.
    • Religious ceremony with a choir.

A sound and light show is also planned for September 2014. Make the most of this moment of homage to visit the Loncin Fort Museum and discover its new exhibition.

The museum offers, among other things, a beautiful collection of personal and military objects, sometimes unusual, that were found on the site.

There will be more information of the commemorations schedule to come. Please visit the website below.

While you wait, why not visit the unique Loncin Fort site and the La garde civique dans tous ses états exhibition, which is open until 31/07/14?
