An original exhibition about the First World War, with as centre piece, Maria, a lady of the manor's stories of the trenches. From 08:06 to 27/10/2014!

Visit Louvignies Castle, close to Soignies and discover the exciting life story of Countess Maria de Villegas de Saint-Pierre (later Van de Steen de Jehay) thanks to her personal journals which were found in the castle's attic.

Meet Maria, the lady of the manor and star of the exhibition

The exhibition is inspired by Maria's true story, told by the lady of Louvignies Castle herself, in "Une Châtelaine dans les Tranchées" published by Racine publishers.

Marvel at life in the castle and the high society activities that Maria indulged in during the Belle Epoque, before the war.

Witness Belgium's entry into the First World War, Chevtogne Castle's transformation into a makeshift hospital in August 1914, Maria's time at the front, in the heart of the trenches alongside civilians and soldiers.

You can also discover the extraordinary friendship that linked Maria to Queen Elisabeth of Belgium, through moving personal accounts.

A contemporary take on the Great War

Alongside the main exhibition, contemporary artists such as Rachel Silski, Ward Nijs and Yves Poelman will be presenting works and bringing a modern-day point of view to the Great War.

    "1914-1918, we remember"

Discover Patrick Mallory's open-air show in front of Louvignies Castle on 15/08/14 featuring numerous cast members, horsemen, dancers, singers, stories and period film projections.

    Follow Maria on Facebook!
