Take part in this family event: a host of activities around Charles V, Holy Roman Emperor and his era, in Brussels, until 31 August 2016.
For some, this emperor was a precursor to European unity. This is despite the fact that he declared war on François I of France three times, and had more than stormy relationship with King Henry VIII of England.
The fact remains that under the rule of François I, Henry VIII and Charles V, Europe of the Middle Ages was able to move into the early modern period. Of the three monarchs, he was the most powerful and his reign lasted from 1515 to 1555.
He spent the majority of his time in Brussels, turning the city into the powerful centre of his immense empire. It was in Brussels that he was emancipated and then abdicated in favour of his son Philippe II. The Carolus festival is a fascinating plunge into the atmosphere of the 16th century and our capital city's prestigious history.
You can discover and take part in several activities such as an initiation to Renaissance dances, a meet and greet with the major characters of the Ommegang as well as a photo opportunity with them, guided tours, games from the days of Breughel, family crest creation, a costume workshop, a competition to take part in the Ommegang and many more!
